Questions, answered
Do I need to know how to play?
Not at all! Mahj 101 is built for total beginners - we start from the very first tile. If you already play, Mahj 102, privates, and our Mingles are for you.
What is American Mahjong? (and how's it different from Chinese?)
We teach American Mahjong, played with the annual National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card and 152 tiles - strategic, social, and full of fun. Chinese Mahjong is the original version, played without the NMJL card, with different rules and many regional variations. Around here, it's all about American Mahjong - bringing people together, one tile at a time.
What should I bring?
Just you! All materials are included in the class price - unless otherwise noted.
How many people can join?
Classes are small groups for personalized teaching. Privates can be one-on-one or with your own group - 12 max. Parties and events can be hosted wherever you like: a private home, a venue, a club, or a favorite local spot. For larger groups we bring in additional instructors so everyone gets plenty of hands-on attention.
Do you host private events and parties?
Yes, always - we love a good party, especially one with a theme! Birthdays, Galentine's, garden nights, fundraisers, and corporate & networking events.
Where do you teach?
Across Miami - Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, Miami Beach, and surrounding areas. I travel to homes, clubs, and venues; a travel charge may apply depending on distance and schedule.
What's the NMJL card?
The annual National Mah Jongg League card lists all the valid hands for American Mahjong and updates every
spring, so players get a fresh one each year. We'll get you comfortable reading it in class.
